Store Focus: Assai (Dundee)

June 6, 2016

Every month at Legacy, we’re bringing you the creme de la creme of indie stores in the UK. Take a look at Assai Records in Dundee!

So tell us about your store…

Assai Records opened in August 2015 as a return to my roots, having worked in music shops between 1992 – 2004, I wanted to get back to the high street to speak to people again about music, explains owner Keith Ingram.

I had been sitting behind a screen since 2004 with my online business HTS (Scotland) Limited following closure of my first indie store in Feb 2004.Then in 2014 I started to plan a return after 10 years away from the high street, I felt it was time to return to with an indie vinyl only record shop, with the vinyl comeback it couldn’t be at a better time. Assai Records was finally born in 2015 after finding the right shop premises in Broughty Ferry (a suburb of Dundee), then through a (pub) meeting with former HMV colleagues, I met with Andy for the first time in 10 years. Andy had been working in the iconic Groucho’s of Dundee for the last 13 years and wanted to be involved, Andy is Assai Records Shop Manager.

Since opening, we have quickly become an established part of the Dundee music community in Dundee with many local musicians supporting the shop either as customers or with instore performances such as Model Aeroplanes who are now signed to a major label, Andrew Wasylyk (Andrew Mitchell of Idlewild / The Hazey Janes), upcoming folk duo Union Chapel, Dave Webster of Sinderins, indie rock band Carousel had their debut performance in the shop on Record Store Day 2016 and many more.

We also have links with some of the local venues and are always keen to support the vibrant music scene with showcases for unsigned acts in the shop on Saturday afternoon’s.

Who else is part of the Assai team?

The shop team members are: Matthew Marra (who is also a member of the Dundee band The Hazey Janes) and Hannah Ross with support from the online team (who can often be seen working in the shop) Claire, Janet, Ryan, Steph, Steven, Paula, Irene and Fiona.

Our passion is vinyl and talking to customers learning their music tastes and making recommendations, we sell new vinyl and record players and turntables and stock Pro-ject Turntable. We specialise in alternative and indie music but also stock a great range of classic albums also.
